Reference Services

The Reference Desk is located on the first floor of HCC Library.

A librarian is available at the Reference Desk during normal library hours. The reference librarian will help you to find and use information efficiently and effectively. Librarians are familiar with HCC departments and activities, and do "ready reference" by assisting you in finding answers to factual questions.

HCC's librarians are dedicated to teaching information literacy and research skills to locate and evaluate information for papers, speeches, and other class projects, as well as to promoting life-long learning. Students can receive one-to-one assistance or arrange a small-group session with a librarian.

Faculty who wish to schedule a library instruction session for their class(es) are encouraged to visit the Reference Desk or call 845-9199 to discuss their research needs.

How can I help my students with information literacy skills?
Try LILO! Learning Information Literacy Online (LILO) uses an interactive Web environment to guide students through the research and writing process from topic development to citing sources. The following six modules guide students through the process:
  1. Understanding the research process
  2. Understanding your assignment
  3. Topic selection
  4. Conducting information searches
  5. Evaluating your results
  6. Integrating information sources into your paper, and citing sources
The above skills, competencies, and abilities are the foundations of Information Literacy.
