"Does a huge slab of monkeypod wood contain an image of the Virgin Mary? Volcano artisan Mark Nicoll believes it does. He put the seven-foot-high piece of wood, rescued from a Kalapana lava flow, on display this week at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hilo. The wood haa been sanded and oiled to a shiny surface. In its surface Nicoll says he sees a shadowy figure that includes the head and shawl of the virgin Mary. Father Don Macgregor said he does not see the wooden slab as any 'miraculous image '."
