GG101 Lab

Quizzes

This page contains instructions for submitting the answers to the quizzes at the end of lessons in the lab manual either by spreadsheet or by tab delimited text file. Scroll down to read about both options.

Each quiz will require that you read and understand the material presented in the lesson. There are 25 questions in each quiz, and most of them will require you to solve a problem involving a map or a rock/mineral specimen.

You will probably not be able to understand the material by reading only the lab manual. Much of the individual help that would be available in the classroom will not be there for you when working alone at home. Learning to use the internet and your geology textbook along with the information in the lab manual is part of the individual learning that a distance education course requires.

You may, and should, ask the instructor for help, and it will be helpful to consult with other students for comprehension. You cannot get help on specific questions on the quizzes however. To do so is dishonest since you are being graded for your work, and not for you ability to collaborate. If you have any doubts about what constitutes dishonesty ask the instructor. It is better to be safe than sorry.

Read the section on academic dishonesty in the syllabus.

Instructions for Submiting Quizzes By Spreadsheet

This is a link to an Excel spreadsheet that can be used to submit answers to the laboratory lesson quizzes at the end of the lesson.

Click here to download the spreadsheet.

The same spreadsheet can be used for all quizzes, so you may want to save a blank copy on your disk.

Other programs that can read spreadsheets should also be able to open the file.

You can download a free copy of "OpenOffice". This is a stable, open-source software that can read all Microsoft Office files. It is available for Windows and Mac OS X. Download it here.

If you do not have a version of Microsoft Office or other software that can open this document you can send the quiz answers by email to geolab@hcc.hawaii.edu according to the following instructions.

Instructions for Submitting Quizzes In Text File Format

All quizzes must have the student name, student ID number, and lesson number. Otherwise they can not be graded.

The answers must be submitted in text format, tab delineated. That means in a two-column format, with the answer separated from the question number by a tab space. Other formats may result in errors or delays in grading the quiz.

Here is an example:

Student ID 55512121

If you do not follow these instructions your quiz may not be gradeable and you will have to resubmit it.

If you have questions about submitting the quiz, send an email to the instructor at geolab@hcc.hawaii.

Regardless of which method you use, always keep a copy of your answers either in your email folder, or on your disk. Otherwise you may have to enter the answers again if there is a problem with the submission.
