STEM Summer Academy

Have you ever asked yourself, Why do I need to learn this? Honolulu Community College's Summer STEM Academy is designed to answer this question. The Summer STEM Academy goal is to bring relevance to Math and Science for high school aged students. This seven-week non-credit summer program located on Honolulu College's campus allows high school aged student to experience the sciences through hands-on activities in math, physics, and chemistry. Students will engage in activities designed to help them prepare for college success.

Parents will get access to financial aid information, attend a FAFSA workshop, and receive guidance from our counselors to assist with college applications.

June 9th - 20th: Mathematics Math matters!
In these sessions, we will examine the problem of traffic congestion in Honolulu (Honolulu has the second worst traffic in the nation) and offer the solutions to the problem of traffic congestion through Braess' s paradox, a German mathematician. We will also explore the possibilities of getting our dream job, becoming a millionaire with the use of geometric progression. We will have lots of fun using mathematics for our own personal improvement and for making a difference in the world.

June 23rd - July 3rd: The Science of Physics
Physics is the science of everything that revolves around our lives. It is applied mathematics and even if you don't think about it you use physics every moment of your life. In this session you will learn the real life use of physics, how it affects you and the outstanding careers that this field offers. How does a plane fly? Why does a boat float? You will have the hands on use to experiments that demonstrates these concepts and why it is such an important field of study.

July 7th - July 11th: College Readiness
This one-week session focuses on college success. It helps students prepare for entry into the University System. This session is designed to orient students to the college setting. Students will be able to identify campus resources, demonstrate knowledge of college procedures, discuss definition of success and evaluate their important life roles.

July 14th - July 25th: The Science of Chemistry
Chemistry is all around us and in everything we do. These two weeks will not make you a chemist, but will instead show that you already are a chemist. We will explore the chemistry behind household items like aspirin, vinegar, baking soda, colored lights, sports drinks, sunscreen, tie dye, soap and plastic. Also we will discover the wonders of chemical changes, nuclear radiation, and learn how to be a productive and safe scientist of chemistry. AGE Limit: All high school students are welcome, including incoming freshmen.

Deadline for Registration: April 30, 2014.

Cost: $25.00, no cost for students from Title I, schools.
