Dr. Mary Okada became President and CEO of Guam Community College in June 2007. Since then, she has overseen a 41 percent increase in enrollment, added new programs, and initiated a rapid campus construction and renovation program that included three new buildings, which opened in 2009, 2010, and 2011. A fourth newly-renovated building will open in November 2012. Prior to becoming president, Dr. Okada served as vice president of financial affairs, controller and accounting supervisor at GCC. Her fiscal guidance has resulted in 11 consecutive years of clean audits for the College. She is a member of numerous local, regional and national workforce and postsecondary education organizations. She received her undergraduate and master’s degrees from the University of Guam, and her doctorate from the University of Phoenix.

Dr. Ray Somera

Dr. Ray Somera is Vice President for Academic Affairs at Guam Community College since October 2007. Prior to assuming his current position, he was the college’s "assessment champion" who directed and managed the comprehensive assessment initiative begun in 2001. As assessment director, he presided over the weekly meetings of the College Committee on Assessment, where assessment plans and reports were regularly critiqued for improvements. As associate dean in 2001, he trained various campus constituents on assessment models and processes, and oversaw the early implementation of TracDat, the college’s assessment data management software in fall 2004. Drawing from the rich GCC assessment experience, he has given numerous presentations in various national and regional conferences. In his present position as AVP and Accreditation Liaison Officer (ALO), he led the campus community in preparing for a comprehensive visit last March 2012 which resulted in a successful reaffirmation of accreditation for GCC.

Dr. Linda Berry

After teaching English and Critical Thinking for many years in the community college system in both Tennessee and California, Dr. Linda Berry entered community college administration in 1997 as a Division Dean at College of Alameda in Northern California. As Dean of Applied Arts and Sciences, she had the privilege of expanding and supporting both academic and vocational programs, and represented the College’s Apparel Design and Merchandising Program at the 3rd Annual Fashion Show in Humen, China.

In Fall of 2000 she was invited to serve as Interim Vice President of Instruction at Merritt College. She remained at Merritt as Vice President for eleven years, working closely with faculty on curriculum development, program expansion, and assessment of student learning outcomes in courses and programs. In 2007 she completed her doctorate in Education with an emphasis in Community College Leadership through Oregon State University. She currently serves as the Vice President of Instruction at Berkeley City College.

Dr. Michael Malachowski

Dr. Miko Malachowski has thirty + years of experience working for the community colleges as an instructor, committee member and on a number of special projects. He has been a member of strategic technology task forces, technology plans, and staff development; he currently sits on the Teaching, Learning, and Technology Committee. He has developed and taught a variety of special, DE, and on-line courses. He currently practices many blended learning techniques in his courses.

As a graduate student at UCB he was the Chairman of the Graduate Assembly, working closely with the Board of Regents, Administration, Faculty, and undergraduate Student Government. In the 90s he promoted Facilitated Interactive Learning. As a member of Professors of Instructional Development Technology (PIDT) he brought methodology to the Ed-Tech forum for California Community Colleges. He has been a member of visiting accreditation teams since 2007. He currently teaches Anatomy and Physiology and enjoys diving around the Islands.

Ms. Janet Chaniot

Janet Chaniot is a retired teacher, administrator, and educational consultant with degrees from the University of Michigan, University of California (Berkeley), and the University of San Francisco. She was elected to the Mendocino-Lake CCD Board of Trustees in 2002 and is now in her third term, having served as clerk and vice president before being elected as president for three years. She is also serving her second threeyear term as an elected member of the Community College League of California Board of Trustees (CCCT).

During her career in education, Chaniot taught Language Arts and Social Sciences in rural and urban school districts of New York, California, and the American School of Lima, Peru. For many years she also taught English at Mendocino College. As the chair of Visiting Teams, she was involved in the WASC accreditation process for secondary schools. She was also active in the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE)as chair and founding member of the Standing Committee on International Concerns. She designed and presented sessions on "English as a Global Language" at state, national, and international conferences.

Mr. James Matthews

Jim Matthews is the Collection Development/Reference Librarian at Chabot College in Hayward, California. He was the library coordinator from 1998 to 2011. He served as the President of the California Community College Council of Chief Librarians from 2006 to 2011 and is currently serving as Immediate Past President.

Jim has participated on four accreditation visiting teams. At Chabot College, Jim was the faculty chair for the drafting of the 2009 Self Study. He has also served on the Academic/Faculty Senate, both as a senator and as the president. He has been a member on many committees in the college, within his district and statewide including Budget, Planning, Technology and Librarianship.

Ms. Merrill Deming

Merrill Deming has been employed in the California community colleges since 1978 and by Chaffey College since 2010. Recently retired as Interim Dean of Mathematics & Science and Social & Behavioral Sciences, she has also served as Professor of Mathematics, Learning Disability Specialist, Coordinator of the Learning Resource Center, and Acting Dean of Continuing Education/Evening College. Ms. Deming has expertise in student learning outcomes, curriculum design, program planning, and enrollment/FTES management as well as in the uses of technology in teaching. She served a California Virtual Campus Faculty Mentor and on the Distance Education Technical Advisory Committee to the Chancellor’s Office. Ms. Deming acts as a consultant to community colleges in the areas of basic skills education, college planning, and student learning outcomes. She was awarded a BA in Political Science (including a concentration in constitutional law) from The George Washington University and completed a MA in Education (Special Education) at California State University, San Bernardino. She has made numerous presentations to state and national organizations.

Mr. John Means

John Means is the Associate Chancellor, Economic and Workforce Development for the Kern Community College District with over 30 years experience in education, training, and administration. His current responsibilities include strategic planning, oversight, and implementation for all of the Career and Technical Education programs, economic development programs, grants, and community education programs for all three colleges in the district. John started teaching at the community college as an adjunct faculty and then full time in psychology and child development and holds a lifetime community college teaching credential. John has just recently also assumed the duties of the vice chancellor of educational services.

Mr. Means is a community college graduate and has been active in the advocacy for career and technical education issues in the community colleges throughout his career. John has served as a board member and immediate past-president for the California Community College Administrators of Occupational Education and treasurer for the National Council for Workforce Education.

Dr. Kindred Murillo

Dr. Kindred Murillo currently serves as the Superintendent/President of Lake Tahoe Community College. She formerly served as the Vice Chancellor of Administrative Services for Contra Costa Community College District. She began her higher education experience in 1996 when she was hired as a part-time faculty member, later to become full-time, at the Desert Community College District. She was promoted to Vice President of Finance and Administrative Services when Copper Mountain Community College became a separate district, overseeing fiscal services, budget, facilities, maintenance and operations, and technology services. Kindred also served as the Vice President of Administrative Services at Pasadena Area Community College District. She has served on six visiting teams and one special team for the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges.

Kindred’s experience outside higher education includes 13 years at the electric utility, Southern California Edison, in several management positions including area manager, employee relations manager, and Business Offices regional manager. She has also held public office as the Mayor and Councilmember for the Town of Yucca Valley, and then became a field representative from the Third District Supervisor in San Bernardino County.

Kindred is a product of the community college system, graduating from Barstow Community College with a liberal arts degree. She went on to complete her B.S. in Business Administration at Redlands University, and her M.S. in Organization Development at Pepperdine University. She completed her doctorate in Organizational Leadership at Pepperdine University in 2010.

Kindred enjoys hiking, bicycling, and the outdoor activities with her husband, son, and Oso (very loyal Akita).

Dr. Victoria Rosario

Dr. Victoria Rosario is the Associate Vice Chancellor of Student Services at Los Rios Community College District. She also teaches in the Educational Leadership Master’s Degree programs at CSU, Sacramento and Drexel University. She previously worked in various other faculty and administrative positions at Sacramento City College, Folsom Lake College, Santa Barbara City College and Irvine Valley College. She promotes the interdependence between instructional and student support programs that promote access and success for all students in the Sacramento region, and sponsors the development of technology through the implementation of many projects in student services: electronic degree audit, electronic disbursement of financial aid, and electronic education plans that are integrated with the district’s student information systems. She has served as an accreditation team member for 4 college districts.

Victoria also worked at the Chancellor’s Office of the California Community Colleges, which provides leadership and technical assistance to the 112 community colleges in the state.

Dr. Rosario received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa in English and a Master’s degree in Counseling from California State University, Long Beach. She also holds community college lifetime credentials in teaching Psychology, Counseling, and in Pupil Personnel Services. She is an alum from a number of leadership development programs including the Metro Chamber’s Leadership Sacramento and the American Association of Community College’s Future Leaders Institute. She obtained her doctorate in Educational Leadership and Administration from Drexel University in June 2012.

Mr. Glenn Yoshida

Born and raised in Monterey, CA, Mr. Yoshida went to high school and college in Los Angeles. After completing his B.S. (Zoology) and M.S. (Biology) at California State University at Los Angeles, he started teaching Anatomy & Physiology at Los Angeles Southwest College in 1976 and continues to teach there to this day.

During his tenure, he has been Department Chair for the last 31 years, Curriculum Committee Chair for 12 years, Faculty Accreditation Co-Chair, and has been an accreditation team member on at least seven campus visits. In addition to his Department Chair duties, he is also the campus SLO Coordinator.

Dr. Matthew Wetstein

Dr. Matthew Wetstein is currently the Interim Vice President of Instruction at San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton, California. His prior assignments have included 5 years as a cabinet level Dean of Planning, Research and Institutional Effectiveness and a brief stint as the Dean of Agriculture, Science and Math. Dr. Wetstein is currently serving as Vice President of the Research and Planning Group of California Community Colleges (The RP Group, 2012-14), and has won national and state awards for his research on the effects of the economic recession on California Community College Students.

Dr. Wetstein has more than a dozen years of teaching experience at the postsecondary level, including his work since 1996 at San Joaquin Delta College. He has served as a faculty union leader, and as a leader of shared governance committees relating to planning and budget, policies and procedures, and faculty development. His teaching has won numerous awards from student groups and in 2004 he received the Distinguished Faculty Award from the Academic Senate of the college.
