Health Clearance Information

The Department of Health requires all college students to be:

  1. Free of Tuberculosis (TB) and
  2. Measles Mumps and Rubella (MMR).

All students must show proof of a negative TB test and proof of two (2) Measles Mumps Rubella (MMR) shots or one MMR shot and one (1) measles shot prior to registration. Documentation of shot records can be submitted to the Admissions and Counseling Office.

Tuberculosis (TB) Test

NEW! TB HOLDS CUSTOMARILY PLACED ON NEW STUDENTS WILL NOW BE EFFECTIVE NOVEMBER 1, 2013!

Due to a shortage of TB testing solution, the State of Hawaii is temporarily suspending TB Clearance requirements for 120 days or until the TB testing material becomes available. During this time period, TB testing will not be conducted at free clinics or doctor offices. As a response to this directive, the University of Hawaii will allow students to register for Summer and Fall 2013 classes with holds being placed effective November 1, 2013. Once this suspension is lifted, students needing TB tests will be expected to get their TB test as soon as the TB testing solution becomes available.

  • Students will be allowed to register for Summer & Fall 2013 without TB test results.
  • Student shall be responsible for seeking up-to-date information and obtaining TB test when the suspension is lifted. Visit the State of Hawaii website for info/updates.
  • TB hold will be lifted permanently as soon as a student provides a copy of TB skin test or chest x-ray report.
  • Student who previously attended college or other educational program may provide:
    • Copy of previous TB test report (keep your original)
    • Copy of proof of previous class/college attendance
  • For other new students or transferring students without proof of TB clearance:
    • Keep up-to-date on checking on status of suspension if extended or not (see State of Hawaii website) as this will affect your ability to register for Spring 2014 classes.
    • Take care of getting TB test as soon as able when suspension is lifted and TB testing solution becomes available.
    • Be aware that TB skin testing requires getting skin test and returning 2-3 days later for reading and TB Clearance report. If positive, a chest x-ray is required and takes about a week to obtain a written report.
  • Submit photocopy of TB clearance report with your student ID # or birthdate to the Admissions Office in person, or via FAX (808) 847-9829, or mail.
