FIRE 280C - Firefighter II

  • Prerequisite: FIRE 280A and FIRE 280B
  • Recommended Prep: FIRE 119B and FIRE 119C This is an elective course that is optional for students after completion of FIRE 280A and FIRE 280B. FIRE majors only.

This course will provide students with the knowledge and skills to function as an integral member of a fi refighting team under general supervision in hazardous conditions. The course involves lectures, demonstrations, and performance skill training. Completion of the course will result in Fire Fighter II certification. Graded on a CR/N basis.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of FIRE 280C, the student will be able to:

The Fire Fighter II course is structured for competency-based group instruction presented in the IFSTA "Essentials of Fire Fighting" (5th Edition) and addresses the standards covered in NFPA 1001 (2002) Chapters 5 and 6, with the exception of those objectives related to hazardous materials response at the awareness and operations levels (NFPA 472).

Specifically, the student will be able to:

  • Meet the general knowledge and skill requirements, and job performance requirements covered in NFPA 1001
  • Demonstrate fire department communication procedures
    • Complete a basic incident report
    • Communicate the need for team assistance
  • Apply fireground operations activities
    • Extinguish an ignitable liquid fire
    • Coordinate an interior attack line
    • Control a flammable gas cylinder fire
    • Protect evidence of fire cause and origin
  • Perform rescue operations
    • Extricate a victim entrapped in a motor vehicle
    • Assist rescue operation teams
  • Employ fire prevention, preparedness, and maintenance activities
    • Prepare a Preincident survey
    • Maintain power plants, power tools, and lighting equipment
    • Perform an annual service test on fire hose
    • Test the operability of and flow from a fire hydrant
