ED 152 - Early Literacy Development

  • Prerequisite or Corequisite: ENG 22 or ESL 23, OR Placement in ENG 100

This course begins with a survey of the history and contemporary issues and trends in early literacy development. It includes an in-depth exploration of how young children learn to read and write and what teachers and caregivers need to know and be able to do to support literacy development from birth through the primary years.

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of ED 152, the student will be able to:

  • Summarize and describe the historical context and the contemporary perspective on how children become literate; and the research relevant to how children learn to read and write.
  • Describe and explain the predictors of success in reading and writing: oral language competence, background knowledge, phonological awareness, graphic awareness and concepts of print.
  • Demonstrate practices that support children in learning the above listed concepts and skills that predict future literacy success.
  • Demonstrate skill in conversing with children and nurturing the conversations among children that lead to the background knowledge and language development that are the foundations for literacy development.
  • Recognize that the power of experiences with quality children's literature enhances children's development of all of the important literacy concepts and skills.
  • Explain the benefits of reading aloud and demonstrate competence in the skill.
  • Demonstrate competence in promoting children's development of writing.
  • Design literacy learning environments that foster children's acquisition of early literacy concepts and skills.
  • Apply authentic assessment knowledge and practices to determine and evaluate children's acquisition of early literacy concepts and skills.
  • Identify the role of families in the development of early literacy concepts and skills and practice some of the proven ways to connect with families in positive and supportive ways.
