DISL 34 - Brakes - Air And Hydraulic

  • Prerequisite: DISL 20

DISL majors only. Classroom instruction and laboratory training covering air and hydraulic brake systems utilizing cutaways, training boards, components, and truck systems. Instruction in air brakes will include the assembly of a complete working system, followed by troubleshooting problems in the system. Also included will be proper brake adjustments and system testing, as well as repairs and safety when working with compressed air and spring brake chambers. Instruction in hydraulic brakes will include brake components, systems, troubleshooting and repairs, cutting drums and discs, and brake adjustments. Instruction will also include Air and Hydraulic Antilock Brake Systems (ABS) and Automatic Traction Control (ATC).

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of DISL 34, the student will be able to:

  • Explain the purpose and principles of a braking system
  • Identify parking, emergency and antilock brake components with their names and function
  • Perform proper procedures to bleed air from hydraulic brakes
  • Describe how a self adjusting brake works
  • Demonstrate the proper procedure to set wheel bearing preload
  • Correctly disassemble and assemble a disc brake, s-cam and wedge brake assembly
  • Identify a vacuum and hydraulic brake booster
  • Connect, operate and troubleshoot a single air brake system
  • Explain the operation of a dual air brake system
  • Describe the major components and operation of parking and emergency brake systems
  • Demonstrate refinishing of wheel cylinders, drum and disc assemblies
  • Define the use and operation of manual and automatic
