COSM 20 - Elementary Cosmetology Theory
- Prerequisite: High School diploma or equivalent; ENG 19 and/or ENG 21, OR ESL 11 & 13 & 14, OR Placement in ENG 22/51/60 or ESL 23; MATH 9, OR Placement in MATH 24/50/53
- Corequisite: COSM 21L and SP 50
COSM majors only. Basics of hygiene, personal grooming, safety and infection control, sanitation and sterilization, structure and disorders of hair, skin and nails, and the Hawai‘i State Board Rules and Regulations.

Student Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of COSM 20, the student will be able to:
- Establish routines to maintain a healthy body and mind
- Explain the elements of effective communication
- Develop and maintain positive human relations
- Recognize the structure and function of bacteria and viruses by their:
- Types
- Classifications
- Growth and reproduction patterns
- Relationship to the spread of infection
- Identify the procedures and precautions for the infection control procedures used in school and salons
- List simple safety and first-aid application for:
- Minor burns
- Cuts
- Choking
- Eye injury
- Fainting
- Define the theory of hair, including formation, growth, structure, behavior and color
- Identify proportions used when creating a design for the human body and face
- Recognize and analyze key areas to create and support the client's total image by using proper communication skills during the client consultation
- Identify the design elements and principles used to compose designs
- Define color and the law of color
- Describe the structure, growth, diseases, disorders and conditions of the nail
- Define the function, composition and types of skin and identify the difference between the disorders and diseases of skin
