ABRP 66 - Refinishing Safety And Vehicle Preparation (3)

  • Prerequisite or Co-requisite: ABRP 62
  • Co-requisite: ABRP 63, 64, 65, 67

ABRP majors only. This course provides an introduction to the safety procedures and practices for automotive refinishing including OSHA guidelines, right to know ACT, EPA, etc. Also studied are the pre-refi nishing operations needed prior to the application of refi nish material to the vehicle.

90 hrs. total. 6 hrs. lect.; 18 hrs. lab. per week over 3.75 weeks

Student Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of ABRP 66, the student will be able to:

  • Explain the need for regulations and safety devices involved with a refinishing department
  • Locate hazardous warning information for products used in refinishing
  • Select the proper personal protection equipment, inspect it, and demonstrate proper use
  • Identify the differences between a variety of automotive finish systems including dry time, chemical, make-up, and plant and body shop application
  • Identify the type and color of a finish, and plan a system for refinishing the vehicle
  • Select and apply the proper undercoat materials
  • Understand how to select sanding materials and equipment and how to sand a vehicle prior to and during the refinishing process
  • Prepare adjacent panels for blending
  • Mask a vehicle for spot repairs, panel repairs, or a complete refinish job, using a variety of masking materials
