College Skills Center

The mission of the College Skills Center (CSC) is to provide students with the academic support to become responsible and self-directed learners. The CSC offers an array of campus-wide academic support services to assist students with their coursework and related activities. The CSC delivers testing services (UH Community College System placement testing, distance education testing, on-campus make-up testing, non-UH testing, etc.); offers non-credit courses in placement test preparation in various modes (in-person, computerized, and/or combination of in-person and online instruction); coordinates student distance learning; coordinates service learning activities; offers instruction in college study skills; and provides tutorial services.

Students must present must present valid picture identification to access services.

The Testing Center

1) The Honolulu Community College Testing Center will be located in the College Skills Center (Bldg. 7, Rm. 319)

  • Closed on May 27th
  • The Testing Room is for Distance Education and Make-Up exams only.
  • No exams will be given out in the last hour before closing.
  • Picture ID is required.
  • No Friday or weekend hours
  • Closed on all State, Federal, and school holidays.

2) The Honolulu Community College Testing will be closed from Friday, May 31, 2013 - June 11, 2013 for Bldg. 7, 3rd floor renovations and temporary relocation and move to Bldg. 2, Rm. 214.

3) The Honolulu Community College Testing Room will be temporarily relocated to Bldg. 2, Rm. 214

  • Closed on July 4th
  • The Testing Room is for Distance Education and Make-Up exams only.
  • No exams will be given out in the last hour before closing.
  • Picture ID is required.
  • No Friday or weekend hours
  • Closed on all State, Federal, and school holidays.

Due to the temporary relocation of the HCC Testing Center and sharing of facilities with another department, the HCC Testing Center will not be open on Fridays during the relocation period from June 12, 2013 throughout the Fall 2013 semester until we move back to our original location (Bldg. 7, Rm. 316) sometime by the end of December 2013. The HCC Testing Center staff apologizes for the inconvenience.

Honolulu Community College now offers services for proctoring tests/exams for institutions outside of the University of Hawaii school system for a fee.  Please contact Charles Miller (844-2396) or chmiller@hawaii.edu for further information.  All test/exam requests for outside of the University of Hawaii school system must be made 2 weeks or more prior to date of test/exam to be taken.

Smarthinking

Smarthinking is a free online tutorial service for community college students. Students are able to submit their writing assignments and have them critiqued by a professional tutor within 24 hours. Compass Brush-Up

Brush-up courses are available in math and English for students who wish to retake the COMPASS Placement Test. These are non-credit courses designed to assist students in improving their math and English skills. Upon completion of 100% of the designated curriculum students are allowed to retake the COMPASS math or English test for free. Applications are available at the College Skills Center, Building 7, Room 313. The cost of each course is $40. Drop-In Tutoring

The College Skills Center is offering drop-in tutoring for the following subjects: Writing, Math, History, English, Psychology, Speech, Biology, Chemistry, ICS, Spanish, Hawaiian Studies, Marketing and Learning Skills. Tutoring is available in Building 7 Room 313 during the following times:

  • Closed on January 21st, February 18th, March 1st, March 25th – March 29th
  • Monday - Thursday: 8:30 AM - 7:00 PM
  • Friday: 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM

Hours effective January 7, 2013 – May 10, 2013. Closed on all State, Federal, and school holidays.

College Study Skills - LSK 30/LSK30A Credit Courses

Students will develop the ability to organize materials, utilize the library, take notes in class, practice time management, prepare and take exams, take responsibility for their own learning and get individual attention as needed to be a successful college student. Enrollment is 1 or 3 credits.
